Utopia Therapeutics treats adults living with substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and — most often — both at the same time. Care is delivered in three ways. Most people use more than one.
Psychiatric diagnostic evaluation
Your first appointment. A licensed clinician spends about an hour getting the full picture — your history, what you're experiencing now, any substance use, what you've already tried, and what you actually want out of this.
It ends with two things: a diagnosis if one fits, and a treatment plan. Both get explained to you in plain language, and nothing about your care gets decided without you in the room.
Individual psychotherapy
You and one licensed clinician, behind a closed door. Sessions run 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on what the work needs. Most plans start weekly and step down as things stabilize.
What happens in the room depends on you. It may be cognitive behavioral work, motivational interviewing, or trauma-informed therapy. What it is not is a lecture. You keep the same clinician, because the relationship is most of what makes this work.
Group psychotherapy
A small group led by a licensed clinician. Not a lecture, not a meeting — structured clinical work done with other people in the room.
Group reaches something individual therapy can't: the moment you hear your own situation come out of someone else's mouth. It works alongside individual therapy rather than replacing it, and most people do both. What is said in group stays in group — that rule is enforced, not suggested.
Substance use, mental health, and co-occurring care
All three services above are used for substance use disorders, for mental health conditions, and for people carrying both. A substance use disorder alongside a mental health condition is the norm here, not the exception — programs that treat one and refer out the other tend to lose people in the handoff. Both are treated here, by clinicians credentialed to do it, under supervision qualified for co-occurring care specifically.
What we do not provide
We would rather be clear about our limits than have someone arrive expecting care we don't offer. Utopia Therapeutics does not provide medical detoxification, inpatient or residential treatment, emergency or crisis services, or medication-assisted treatment.

Couples and marriage counseling
We also work with couples — married, unmarried, long-term, or separating. The situation we are built for that most practices are not: when a substance use disorder or an untreated mental health condition is part of what is going wrong between two people. Treating the relationship and the substance use in the same place means neither one waits on the other.

Assessments for courts, probation and employers
Alongside ongoing treatment we provide drug and alcohol assessments, including for people sent by a court, a probation department, a children-services caseworker or an employer. Requirements differ by court and by case type, so bring your paperwork and we will tell you straight whether what we provide meets what you have been ordered to do.

Common questions about treatment here
How long does outpatient treatment last?
There is no fixed length — your treatment plan sets it, and it gets revised as things change.
Most plans start weekly and step down as things stabilize. Some people are done in a couple of months; some stay longer because staying longer is what is working. Anyone who tells you the length before they have assessed you is guessing.
How often would I come in?
Most people start at about once a week and step down from there.
If you are doing both individual and group, that may mean two visits in a week. The schedule is built around what the clinical work needs and what you can realistically keep — a plan you cannot attend is not a plan.
Can I do individual and group therapy at the same time?
Yes, and most people do.
They do different jobs. Individual therapy is the private work. Group reaches something individual therapy cannot — the moment you hear your own situation come out of someone else's mouth. Group works alongside individual therapy rather than replacing it.
What if I need medication?
Utopia does not prescribe medication, and we will tell you that plainly rather than leave you to find out.
We provide diagnostic evaluation and psychotherapy. If your evaluation points toward medication, we will say so and help you understand what to ask for from a prescriber. We also do not provide medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder.
What happens if I miss sessions, or if I relapse?
You call us and you come back. A return to use is a clinical event, not a reason to be discharged.
Relapse is part of the course of a substance use disorder for many people. It changes the treatment plan; it does not end your care. The one thing that genuinely does not work is disappearing quietly, so tell us what happened.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes — and substance use treatment records carry confidentiality protections stricter than ordinary medical records.
Nothing goes to a court, probation officer, employer, family member or another provider unless you sign a release naming exactly who receives it. In group, what is said in group stays in group — that rule is enforced, not suggested. The narrow legal exceptions, such as an immediate risk of serious harm, get explained to you at your first appointment.
Do you treat teenagers or children?
No — Utopia Therapeutics treats adults.
